Signs Your Hot Water System is About to Fail
Hot water systems rarely fail without warning. In the weeks before a complete breakdown, most systems show at least one or two signs that something isn’t right, if you know what to look for.

Rust, Discolouration and Odd Smells
Rusty or discoloured water from the hot tap, or a metallic smell, often points to corrosion building up inside an ageing tank. Once corrosion sets in, it typically continues rather than resolving on its own.
Noise and Inconsistent Temperature
Rumbling or banging sounds from the tank usually mean sediment has built up at the bottom, which makes the system work harder and reduces its efficiency.
Water that’s inconsistently hot, or a system that takes noticeably longer to recover between uses, is another sign it’s nearing the end of its working life.
Knowing When to Repair or Replace
Systems generally last eight to twelve years depending on the type and how well they’ve been maintained. If yours is approaching that age and showing any of these signs, it’s worth having it assessed before it fails without warning, usually at the least convenient moment.

If your hot water system is showing any of these signs, we can inspect it and advise honestly on whether a repair or replacement makes more sense. Contact us for an inspection.
